DIABETES SYMPTOMS |
|
| |
| Feline
diabetes has many symptoms. The following are some of the most common ones
found in a cat with a high blood glucose level (hyperglycemia). If your
cat exhibits any of these symptoms, you should have him/her examined by
a veterinarian as soon as possible. |
| |
- Increased
water intake
- Weight
loss and/or increase in appetite
- Frequent
and/or inappropriate urination
- Lethargy
- Decrease
in grooming
|
| |
| Cats
with a low blood glucose level (hypoglycemia) exhibit different symptoms.
You might see some of the following signs if your cat is hypoglycemic. |
| |
- Increased
appetite
- Frequent
vomiting
- Restlessness
- Convulsions
|
| |
| Your
cat can survive short periods of hyperglycemia. This is not true of hypoglycemia.
If your cat exhibits symptoms of hypoglycemia, try rubbing a little bit
of Karo syrup or honey on the gums and get to the vet immediately. |

| You
can find more in-depth information about feline diabetes on the Feline
Diabetes Bulletin Board. I use and have used this resource exhaustively.
There is even a vet who frequently posts on the message board there. It's
also a great place for support. You are not alone. You are always welcome
to e-mail me with any questions as well. |

All
symptoms listed here are based on my personal experience with my own
cats. Symptoms may vary from cat to cat and nothing is a substitute
for a medical opinion. I urge you to seek medical advice if you think
your cat is ill. |
